Professor Feroz Ali is an outstanding teacher. I have read all his books and learned patent law through his online courses. His vision is remarkable—if he says bulletproof patents are here and AI is the key, he sees the future clearly. While many keep AI-driven patent drafting knowledge to themselves, he shares it selflessly. I wish him a long, healthy life and hope to remain his student forever, continuously learning from him.
Thank you for your kind words. There are more than 80 AI-related initiatives underway in different IPOs as per WIPO. If the IPOs are adopting AI, the market will have no other option but to follow. While there is much skepticism in some domains on that impact of AI, I am yet to see any such thing when it comes to use of AI in patents. AI-driven patent drafting and prior art search are clearly the way forward. We will be exploring this here in this newsletter.
It is always great to see you taking the lead in talking about cutting edge issues in IP laws, looking forward to see impact of AI on patents. I am quite curious to learn and know more about how AI would enable prior art search in minutes when it comes to pharmaceutical patents specially in NCE category.
Yes, Ramya, we need to keep track of these developments to see how they turn out. The new tools are able to give a result - what is called quick "first pass" prior art analysis. This will require more follow up as of now. As these tools get better, I am hopeful that novelty search will not be a matter that will be checked by the IPO, rather it will be checked by at the user end before filing the application.
The two courses talked about herein were impeccable. The fact that law and pedagogy doesn't catch up with the advancements in tech shall be relooked. Thanks for this post sir. Much useful for budding academicians.
Thanks. You are right. Patent drafting needs to be taught as a practical course using the new tools of AI that have emerged. Law has a weird relationship with technology, especially when it comes to IP. Some of the major reforms in IP law came about after the emergence of new technologies. For instance, the large-scale reproduction technologies involving media resulted in the criminalization of IP infringement.
